Events
in Grasmere and the English Lake District
If
you're lucky enough to be in Grasmere in August, you could
enjoy the thrills and spills of Grasmere Sports. This
is the main event in the Grasmere calendar and one of the
most popular traditional events in the Lake District. Indeed,
it's been so popular over the years that this event has been
running since 1852!
Events at Grasmere Sports include Cumberland wrestling, fell
running and hound trails. The event is usually held on the
August bank holiday Sunday but do double-check before making
your final plans.
Another popular event in Grasmere is the rushbearing ceremony
held at St. Oswald's Church. This is an ancient custom that
dates back to the days before church floors were flagged.
Parishioners used to bring rushes to lay on the church floor
to purify the air and protect against the cold. Today the
children of Grasmere are rewarded with gingerbread if they
carry one of the rushes!
